Riverworld: The Series?

And yet another reason why I'm not a network programmer. Here's some of the press release regarding Riverworld's ratings, which were good enough... well, to put out a press release...

RIVERWORLD POWERS SYFY TO MOST WATCHED SUNDAY PRIME OF 2010 WITH 2.1 MILLION TOTAL VIEWERS

New York, NY – April 20, 2010 – The four-hour Syfy Original Movie Riverworld grabbed 2.1 million total viewers during its premiere on April 18, powering Syfy to its most watched Sunday prime of 2010.

This was Syfy's top Sunday night in HH rating, total viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49.

During the telecast from 7-11PM (ET/PT), Riverworld averaged 1.03 million Adults 25-54 and 733,000 Adults 18-49 along with a 1.6 household rating.

Riverworld also soared +60% in HH rating, +62% in total viewers, +57% in Adults 25-54 and +50% in Adults 18-49 compared to Syfy's average delivery in the 7-11PM timeslot in the prior four weeks.

What does it mean? Is there a Riverworld series in our future? Well, considering they could trim it down to a limited amount of special effects per episode and it's not like they'd need a lot of big sets, the money might make sense on this one. What it will mostly will depend on is the breakdown of whether viewership increased, decreased or stayed with the mini through the whole 4 hours.

If they do decide to turn it into a series, let's hope they rework the series a bit and enrich the characters and their motivations, and do a little better world building. After 8 years, don't you think someone would have built a town or two down the river? Wouldn't there be some commerce? Wouldn't there be boats on the river? After all they have a riverboat, an airship, guns, swords, etc.

But then again, what do I know?
